Manet, Monet, Cezanne, Van Gogh and Picasso profoundly changed the art form. They had difficult beginnings. The impact of Cezanne and Van Gogh were only recognized past their death. Only a few foresighted art collectors and merchants were taken by the power of these new works. The Thannhauser family started to display Manet and Renoir in their Munich gallery in 1909 and in the 30’s left Germany and finally settled in New York. Their collection was donated to the Guggenheim Museum. About 50 of these masterpieces are now on display in Aix-en-Provence in the beautiful setting of the Hotel de Caumont until the end of September.
It is well worth a trip to Aix en Provence while enjoying our hospitality this Summer.
